Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan: Sometimes in life, some stories are so close to our hearts that when they are presented in a different way, it causes a pang in the heart. The same is the case with the film ‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’, which not only does injustice to writer Ruskin Bond’s famous story ‘The Eyes Have It’, but also loses a beautiful feeling.
When the path deviates from the original story
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Ruskin Bond’s ‘The Eyes Have It’ is a short but heart-touching story in which two strangers meet in a train, both are blind but do not let each other realize this. There is lightness and innocence in their conversation, which leaves a sweet smile at the end of the story.
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan But ‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’ turns this innocence into a strange fantasy. The heroine of the film, Saba, who is appearing on screen for the first time, is preparing herself for the role of a blind girl. As a part of this preparation, she travels blindfolded in a train where she meets Jahan, who is also blind.
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan This part of the story could have been interesting, but the film makes it look artificial and cumbersome. The dialogues are so dramatic that you feel like you are watching a theatre rehearsal. The emotions of the characters seem shallow and every scene feels trapped in a different frame.

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Blindness, which is a sensitive subject, is shown in this film as a strange fantasy. Saba’s constant wearing of a bandage and the arrival of a blind man in her life – the way all this is presented crosses the line of insensitivity. Jahan and Saba getting close to each other, living together, singing songs, and kissing in the rain – all this is shown but without the soul that could have made it special. At one point, Saba opens her eyes, but then they get intimate after making Jahan wear a bandage. This scene not only looks strange but also hurts the dignity of the story.
When the strings of the story get entangled
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan The second part of the film becomes completely directionless. The story moves forward with the help of coincidence and chance, where sometimes two Indians meet in Azerbaijan, and sometimes after three years, they meet by chance in a European city. The thinking, dialogues, and decisions of the characters in the film are so unclear that the audience itself gets confused as to who is blind and who is seeing. The lack of coordination between the director’s imagination and writing is clearly visible. Even a brilliant actor like Vikrant Massey is not able to save the weakness of the film.
Where did ‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’ go wrong
‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’ is one of those films that prove that without a good story, any big artist, beautiful location, and melodious music have no value. The biggest shortcoming of the film is that it is not honest with its characters and audience. The lightness of emotions, the weak grip of dialogues, and the deviation from the soul of the story all these together make a film that will displease not only Ruskin Bond but any true literature lover.
