Rajkummar Rao: has always been known for his strong acting, but this time his film did not get the start that was expected. Maalik earned only Rs 4.02 crore on the first day, which is much less than some other films of this year. Especially Metro was even below a film like Dino, which opened with 4.05 crores on the first day.
Expectations for the second day are for a tremendous jump of 152%
However, after the disappointment of Friday, the film gave some relief on Saturday. The film recorded a great increase of 152% in ticket sales from 1 pm to 2 pm. While only 2.9 thousand tickets were sold at this time on the first day, 7.5 thousand tickets were sold on the second day. This is an indication that perhaps the audience is now becoming interested, and the film is slowly gaining momentum.
Morning occupancy increased concern
It is also true that the occupancy of the morning show i.e., the presence of the audience, saw a decline. While 12.8% seats were filled in the morning show on the first day, it dropped to 6.5% on the second day. This decline is a matter of concern and raises questions about the sustainability of the film.
One of the weakest openings so far
Maalik’s opening is being counted as the eighth weakest opening of the year 2025. Only 66.15 thousand tickets were sold on BookMyShow on the first day, which puts it behind Fateh (67 thousand). Not only this, but this figure is only slightly better than low-budget films like Kapkap II, Superboys of Malegaon, and The Bhootni.
What will be the way forward
Maalik has had a weak opening compared to Rajkummar Rao’s previous films. Now all eyes are on whether the film will be able to win the trust of the audience in the coming days. If the ray of hope seen on Saturday afternoon continues for the entire weekend, then the film can compensate for the loss to some extent.
Will word of mouth provide relief
Many times, the audience accepts the film slowly, and positive reviews on social media can also help. If word of mouth increases, then Maalik may get a second chance. While Maalik had a weak start, it did show some shine on the second day. But the film still has a long way to go. No one doubts the ability of Rajkummar Rao, but now the need is that the film connects with the audience and stands strong at the box office.
